Long Time.... No Posts

Sorry Rods....I have been neglectful of your needs for funny highlights and amusing anecdotes. But I will make an early New Year's Resolution to be more diligent in posting game recaps in 2017.

Ian was kind enough to come to a couple of games and get some action shots for us. I am currently working on a player profile page that I will publish when we have photos of everyone.

Hot Rods Pick Up Win vs. Knight Riders

The Hot Rods Hockey Club picked up their first win, defeating the Knight Riders 6-3 on Friday night.

With only 10 skaters, the Hot Rods looked nervous before the game seeing as how the average age of their opponent looked to be about 22. But the Rods were ready to skate, especially the Chilliwack Connection, who combined for 5 goals and 8 points. Tony Schellenberg scored 3,  Mark Schellenberg scored one and Nick Giannoulis opened the scoring with his goal.

Henry Leaver got the other goal and Keith Pelletier added 3 assists.

Next action is Friday, Sept 23 against the Thundercats II.

Hot Rods Start Season with Tie

The Hot Rods Hockey Club began the 2016-17 NCHL Winter Season in true Rods fashion, a defensive contest ending in a 7-7 tie.

Tayler Delannoy played a great game in net, but after a "few" defensive breakdowns, the Blues were able to capitalize on some rebounds.

Rylan Northcott scored got the hat trick,  which earned him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award.

With 48 seconds left in the game, Keith Pelletier was able to tie the game with the Rods net empty. It was a "right place at the right time" kinda goal, as he had dropped his stick and just happened to be in the right spot for the rebound.

Hot Rods Summer Season Comes To An End

The Hot Rods Hockey Club suffered an unfortunate loss to the Smoked Salmons in their first Summer Playoff game, cutting short their bid for the '16 Summer NCHL Championship. The Rods went down 5-1 in the first period and could not climb back into it before the final buzzer.

This Summer season had a lot of ups and downs, but was always a good time to hang with buds and enjoy a few beers.

The 2016-17 Winter Season is set to begin early September. I will be setting up an ice time before the season starts to play some shinny and have a few laughs.

Tony had a hell of a summer season leading the team in points.

Berk comes to one game and get the Shootout winner!!!!!

Andrew gets the worst idea ever award for not letting go of the rope while surfing.
The result is a spiral fracture, but at least it's not his "lovin" hand.....

Hot Rods Losing Skid Hits 4 Games

The Hot Rods Hockey Club has been on the losing side of their past few games, dropping four over the past couple weeks.

The first one came at the hands of the Imperials in a penalty filled game where the Rods lost 6-1. Not long after,  the Imperials were moved up to Div 9.

The second loss came in a nail-biter, with the Hot Rods losing 5-4 to the Fussy Puckers. Tony Schellenberg had a goal and an assist in the game vs the Fussy Puckers to earn him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award.

The Hot Rods third loss came at the hands of the Ice-oholics, falling 2-1 in a well-played, hard-fought game that saw very few penalties, just good hockey. Tayler Delannoy earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game for keeping the Rods in the game with some truly amazing saves.

The latest occurred last Wednesday night at the hands of the China Towners. The Hot Rods lost 3-1 in a game that showcased what happens when Andrew gets angry. With 16 penalty minutes, which included an unsportsmanlike, a cross checking, an interference and a gross misconduct, he quickly took control over the PIM lead for the team. Andrew was diligent by triple-checking to make sure he was really ejected from the game for getting 3 minor penalties, before he screamed across the ice to the referee to let him know what he thought of him, resulting in the previously mentioned gross misconduct. Scott Kasaboski played a great game in net, even after pulling his groin early in the second period.

The Hot Rods next action is Sunday, June 26th at 5 pm vs Nuclear Winter.

Game 3 Report

The Hot Rods Hockey Club beat the Blues 5-3 in NCHL South action Monday night, in a game where Tony Schellenberg missed the net when it would have been impossible for it to be any more empty.

Greg Walker and Dean Tuttle each had 2 goals in the game, with Tom Hautzinger picking up the other goal in his first game back after injury. Schellenberg did not convert on the wide open net though.

Walker was able to pick up his first goal right before buzzer for the end of the first period. The Hot Rods won the draw with 3.4 seconds left on the clock and Walker cashed in the rebound on a shot from the point, unlike Schellenberg in the open net.

Scott Kasaboski made some amazing saves for the Rods, including a beauty glove hand on a clapper from one of the Blues defenceman. Maybe Tony needed a goalie like Scott in the net in order to score.

Dean Tuttle earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award for his two goals, including a hell of a snipe to pretty much seal up the game for the Rods. By the way,  Tony missed a wide open net.

Game 2 Report

The Hot Rods Hockey Club were able to come away with a single point on Sunday night from a 3-3 tie with the Bounty Hunters.

The Bounty Hunters scored early in the first to take a 1-0 lead into the second period. They scored again to make it 2-0 near the end of the second, but the Rods were able to score three quick goals to take a 3-2 lead into the third.

The Bounty Hunters then tied the game with just over a minute left. In the shootout, both teams were 1 for 3.

Tony Schellenberg opened the scoring for the Hot Rods and Keith Pelletier scored the other two, earning him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award!

2016 Summer Season - Game 1

The Hot Rods Hockey Club started the 2016 Summer Hockey Season off with a victory, winning 4-2 over Nuclear Winter.

After a quick goal from Nuclear Winter, Chris Potter scored what could be the nicest goal of the Summer Season early in the first period to tie the game 1-1. Reid Tanigami later put the Rods up 2-1 on the power play with a laser from the point. By the end of the first,  Nuclear Winter had the game tied 2-2.

Tony Schellenberg was able to pot a clapper from the circle in the 2nd period, and Tom Hautzinger put the game on ice with a shot from the point. Unfortunately, his age is started to show as he heard something "pop" when he shot the puck. He was unable to finish the game, but he was fortunately able to drink a few beers. He did complain of discomfort when laughing really, really hard at an extremely long and airy fart by a teammate in the parking lot.

The Hot Rods posted the most total penalty minutes in a game on Wednesday night, with Kevin "Goon" Csada leading the way. Not sure what a kneeing penalty is but whatever. The Rods were given a speech about the importance staying out of the box. The giver of the speech then proceeded to be the next guy to head to the box......

Luckily for the Hot Rods, Scott Kasaboski was able to stop both penalty shots for the 6th and 7th infractions they received. This and his stellar play throughout the game earned Scott the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award as the Hot Rods player of the game.

Nice win boys!!!

Last Game of the Season

The Hot Rods Hockey Club pulled out a victory in their last game of the 2015-2016 season, beating the Bad Pandas 5-4.

Tom Hautzinger earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award for his 2 goal performance, as well as his iron man streak. He was the only Rod to play all 30 games this season.

The Hot Rods also got goals from Ian Silkstone, Sean Vander Linden and Kevin Csada. John Barlow played well in goal for the Rods, minus one or two plays he would like back.

The Playoffs start Sunday, April 3rd with the Hot Rods going up against the only team they have yet to beat this year, the Rustlers.

Past Three Game Reports

The Hot Rods Hockey Club have played three games over the past couple weeks and the reporting staff here at the blog have apparently been on holidays.

On Thursday March 10th, the Hot Rods played the Rustlers in NCHL South Division action at Scott Seaman Arena. It was a hard-fought game against a good Rustlers team but the Rods came up short, losing 8-4.

John Barlow got the first goal for the Hot Rods, scoring on a great move for his first of the year. It also happened to be the first game he played out of the net. This goal and an assist earned him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award. Nick Giannoulis picked up 2 goals and Chris Potter scored the other one.

Taylor Delannoy played a good game but even a bench with 16 skaters couldn't help him that night.

The Hot Rods next game took place on Wednesday March 16th in Chestermere versus the Duffmen. This was an exciting game that went right down to the wire ending in a 4-4 tie after unsuccessful shootout attempts by both teams. Sean Van der Linden scored the game-tying goal with 32 seconds left which earned him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award.

The Hot Rods got the first 3 goals from Tony Schellenberg, Kevin Csada and Tom Hautzinger. And how did Tom score..... By cutting to the middle like he's supposed to......

John Barlow got the start that night and made a bunch of awesome saves to keep the rods in it.

It might have been the green jerseys but the Luck of the Irish was with the Hot Rods Hockey Club when they played Nuclear Winter on St. Patrick's Day.

The Rods posted a 9-2 shellacking, getting goals from 7 different players. Everyone on the roster tallied at least one point, including John Barlow (1 assist) who got the start in goal, except for one..... You should have cut to the middle Tom.....

The Hot Rods Hockey Club have one more game this season on March 31st and then it's into the drive for the Championship. Playoffs start early in April and the Hot Rods are liking their chances to go deep.

Berkley Crowe earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award with 1 assist and what seemed to be 47 chances for a goal.

Sunday 6 March 2016

Rods Double Up Drillers

The Hot Rods Hockey Club pulled out there sixth victory in a row Friday night, beating the drillers 4-2 in NCHL South action.

Nick Giannoulis open the scoring with a redirected shot from the point by Tom Hautzinger. Tom then made it 2-0 on a great individual effort cutting to the middle... like he's supposed to do... like Chris tells him to do... all the time.....

The Drillers tied the game with goals in the second and third, but the Rods pulled ahead with 2:30 left in the 3rd on a beautiful goal from Ian Silkstone when a rebound squirted out. Brian Galambos sealed the win on an empty netter with 32 seconds left on the clock.

Spencer Kathrens got the call to play goal for the Hot Rods and played a stellar game.

ICE CHIPS.....
- The game got chippy after Cam Campbell started stirring shit up early in the first. Apparently other teams don't like it when, even if the puck is loose, don't go near the goalie with your stick. They might get angry and slash you over.....and over......and over.......
- Bryan Galambos earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award for his goal and assist performance. Nice pose...

Tuesday 23 February 2016

Rods Earn 5th Straight!!!

The Hot Rods Hockey Club earned their fifth straight victory Monday night with a hard fought 3-1 win over the Ice-oholics.

Andrew McAllister opened the scoring with a tap in from a cross-ice feed by Chris Potter. That display of raw speed and sweet back door play earned McAllister the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award. Potter was able to bat a rebound out of the air to take the score to 2-0.  The Ice-oholics were able to pull within one, closing out the second period at 2-1 Rods.

The Hot Rods went into shut down mode for the third period and Cam Campbell put the nail in the coffin on an empty-netter with 32 seconds left.

Tayler Delannoy played a superb game, coming through for the Rods when they needed him.

ICE CHIPS....
- while the Rods played well defensively in the third, offensive chances seemed to be hard to cash in on for them. At one point, they were able to get a 3 on 1 and couldn't even come out of it with a shot.... There's always next time!

Monday 22 February 2016

Hot Rods Win 4th in a Row!!!

The Hot Rods Hockey Club pulled out their fourth win in a row, beating the Blues 8 to 5 in NCHL South action last Saturday night.

Tony Schellenberg is probably one of the most giving teammates you will ever play with. He led the Rods with a hat trick, even though the official score sheet only had him marked for 2 goals. He wanted to give his other goal to someone who needed to boost their stats. We're not sure who got it but I'm sure they're saying a big thank you to Tony.

Also scoring for the Hot Rods was Nick Giannoulis, Kevin Csada, Henry Leaver, Trevor Bueckert, Sean Vander Linden and Chris Potter. Tayler Delannoy kicked in 3 assists from the blue line and John Barlow was once again solid in net.

ICE CHIPS....
- John Barlow and Josh Delannoy both took roughing penalties for scrums after the whistle. I believe John felt bad that Josh was taking all the penalties and wanted to help him out so he didn't feel like he had to take more.
- Tony Schellenberg earned himself the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award with his offensively performance. To celebrate this distinction, he went curling and injured himself, hitting the IR for an undetermined amount of time with a lower body injury.

Monday 8 February 2016

Hot Rods Pull Out Gritty Win

The Hot Rods Hockey Club fought hard for their third straight win, beating the Bounty Hunters 4-3 in NCHL action Sunday night. After falling 2-0 early in the first, the Rods were able to get within 1 by the end of the frame on a nice goal by Ian Silkstone.

Henry Leaver scored early in the second to tie the score 2-2. The second period ended with a total of 8 penalties between the two teams and even more animosity.

Nick Giannoulis took the score to 3-2 with a quick shot right off a faceoff win by Kevin Csada. Chris Potter got the eventual game winner not long after the Giannoulis goal, in what was clearly poetic justice for multiple elbows and crosschecks to the head and upper body area late in the second. His effort somehow earned him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award. The Bounty Hunters would pull within one late in the third but the Hot Rods were able to stymie any hopes of a come back, making the final 4-3 for the good guys.

ICE CHIPS......
- Trevor Bueckert had the opportunity to take a penalty shot after drawing the sixth penalty on the Bounty Hunters. He knew he was going crest from the red line.

- Tayler Delannoy took a break from his goalie sub duties to play defence in place of his brother. Although he had one questionable shot that looked like one Josh would take, he may be asked to fill that role a little more often.

- Ian Silkstone had a rough game in front of the net. It was a great distraction so his line mates could score.... Although he might not agree that it was worth it.

Sunday 7 February 2016

Make It Two in a Row!!

The Hot Rods Hockey Club came away with the victory on Thursday night, topping the short-staffed Bluebird, 6-5. This was the second in a row after a lengthy winless streak that the Rods had had quite enough of.

The Hot Rods were able to get a 4-0 lead early in the second versus the 8 skaters on Bluebird's bench. Then, the Rods turned off the switch. They seemed to go into coast mode and allowed their opponents to score 3 goals and get themselves back in the game. The line of Galambos, Schellenberg and Potter were able to cash in twice in one shift to take it to 6-3, but Bluebird fought back to 6-5. Much to the relief of the Hot Rods, that was as close as they came.

Chris Potter led all scorers with 2 goals, which normally wouldn't be surprising but on this night he actually didn't even score.

Tayler Delannoy filled in for John Barlow and was solid for the Hot Rods yet again.

ICE CHIPS......

- the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award was never officially handed out after the game, but Tony Schellenberg earned it in another hard fought effort. He was credited with a goal and an assist but had at least 4 points on the night.

- Andrew McAllister was at least -4 on the night.

Friday 29 January 2016

FINALLY.......

Well... It finally happened! The Hot Rods Hockey Club broke an 8 game losing streak by beating the Bad Pandas 7-3 in Thursday nights game.

The Rods made some improvements in their positioning after some whiteboard work in the dressing room prior to the game. The breakout was working well and a swarm style defence in their own end helped to get the victory.

Tayler Delannoy earned the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award for a great performance in goal, filling in for John Barlow. He was so excited after the game, he just had to "Dab".

ICE CHIPS.....
- the last time the Hot Rods won a game was November 15th, 2015.
- the win Thursday night had absolutely nothing to do with Chris Potter's absence, no matter what anybody says.

Saturday 23 January 2016

Hot Rods Still Looking for a Win.....

In an effort to turn around their current slump, the Hot Rods Hockey Club had the 90s music blaring in the dressing room before the game. But even Sir Mixalot, Vanilla Ice and Metallica could not help them on Thursday night as they dropped their 8th in a row, losing 2-0 to Nuclear Winter.

The Hot Rods had control of the game for the most part,  as well as many good quality scoring chances. Even though the score doesn't reflect it,  the Rods out shot the Winter by a large margin, but just couldn't seem to find the back of the net.

John Barlow was once again solid in net but couldn't get any offensive help for his performance.

ICE CHIPS......
- Tom Hautzinger's face turned red after tripping on the face off dot in his own end during the second period. To make things worse, it was the same spot where Tony Schellenberg had tripped during warm up, and Tom had subsequently pointed and laughed at him.
- Trevor Bueckert earned himself the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award for running over a much smaller fellow while on the forecheck. It was a beautiful hit, but wasn't as appreciated by the victim.  This was evident by the hack Trevor received right after he put the guy on his back.

Tuesday 19 January 2016

Hot Rods Continue Slump

The Hot Rods Hockey Club continued their losing skid on Thursday night at Scott Seaman, dropping their seventh in a row to the Duffmen by a score of 6-3. It was a frustrating loss for the Rods as 5 of the 6 Duffmen goals were redirected off someone or something. It seemed like they just couldn't catch a bounce.

John Barlow played a hell of a game but was plagued by those bad bounces. His performance still earned him the Amateur Stuntman of the Game Award despite the loss.

Goal scorers for the Hot Rods were Sean Vander Linden, Tom Hautzinger and Chris Potter, who got it past the Duffmen goalie with a blistering off-speed wrister from the point.

The Hot Rods next game is an AWAY game against Nuclear Winter on Thursday, January 21st at 10:30 pm at Scott Seaman. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca but are going fast.

ICE CHIPS....
- Andrew McAllister finally showed up to a game

Monday 11 January 2016

Thursday Night Loss Continues 6 Game Slide

The Hot Rods Hockey Club lost their sixth in a row on Thursday night by a score of 6 - 1 to the Rustlers.

The Rustlers came out flying scoring 4 goals in the first and 2 more in the second, despite a great effort in net by Tayler Delannoy.

The Rods were able to get on the board with just a few minutes left in the third to break the shut out.

We'll get em next time.

ICE CHIPS.......
- the Hot Rods have yet to win a game since donning their new jerseys.
- many thought the new helmet stickers would be the good luck charm to end the streak.

Thursday 7 January 2016

Sunday Game Report

The Hot Rods Hockey Club lost another game on Sunday night against the Drillers,  losing 4-1. Apparently the Sunday night after Christmas holidays before everyone goes back to work is a bad time to play hockey. It felt like I was skating in quicksand!

That's five in a row for the Hot Rods,  who are in a slump that has seen them go quite a while without a win.

ICE CHIP'S.... We learned that Nick can actually break his own stick with his skate.
